Galileo and Darwin October 24th and 25th : have a good weekend at the Science Centre |
2009 is the year of Charles Darwin and Galileo Galilei. 200 years ago Darwin was born and 400 years ago for the first time Galileo pointed his telescope toward the sky and began to see mountains and moon valleys , the four largest satellites orbiting Jupiter and the infinite stars invisible to the naked eye until that moment. It is precisely to celebrate this discovery that the United Nations have proclaimed 2009 as International Year of Astronomy. " this is the year of the two great revolutions of modern science: that of physics, initiated by the astronomical discoveries of Galileo, and that of biology, initiated by Darwin with the elaborations of the theory of natural selection. Their discoveries go well beyond the purely scientific field, they involve also the philosophical and even theological field, because together they moved the man at the center of the universe and they have definitely changed his relationship with nature, giving it a new role and new responsibility. This weekend, the Science Centre dedicates its program to these two great scientists. there will be fun and educational meetings , scientific demonstrations and activities for children. The appointment with Professor Peter Cerreta ScienzaViva - non-profit association for scientific and technological dissemination - will be really interesting and take place on Sunday 25th at 11:30am with a seminar entitled: telescopes, inclined planes and other excuses to talk about Galileo. The event is organized in collaboration with Amici di città della Scienza and it it will be possible to visit the exhibition on Darwin, created by Patrick Tort under the auspices of the Institute Charles Darwin International, and talk about examples of " evolution in progress ", see how animals and plants react to environmental changes and adapt to meet new challenges, but also how human activities interfere with natural laws and a determining influence on the evolutionary dynamics. |
